Something shifts in the air here as August draws to a close. The cicadas grow quieter, the evening light stretches a little longer over the hills of the Haut-Agenais, and the bastides settle back into the unhurried rhythm that makes them so charming.

July and August have their own magic — long evenings by the pool, the buzz of summer markets. But September offers something different: the same villages, the same roads lined with tired sunflowers and vines just turning gold, without the crowds.
You can wander the lanes of Villeréal without jostling for space, find a table on a terrace without booking three days ahead, and the days stay warm enough to make full use of the heated pool — open right through to the end of September.
Temperatures ease off gently, with cooler nights that are lovely for sleeping with the windows open. It’s also the month when the surrounding countryside takes on its first autumn colours, without yet losing the softness of summer.
A weekend not to miss: European Heritage Days

One of the highlights of the back-to-school season this year falls on the weekend of 19 and 20 September 2026: European Heritage Days, with a special opening for school groups from Friday 18th. This 43rd edition puts the spotlight on two national themes — the heritage of photography and heritage at risk — but what really makes the weekend worthwhile are the doors that are normally closed: town halls, craft workshops, private residences, and sometimes even local châteaux open up behind the scenes to the public.
Around Villeréal, it’s the perfect excuse to go a little further than usual: the Château de Biron, the neighbouring bastides of Monflanquin and Monpazier, or the smaller local heritage sites all get to tell their story differently for the occasion.
We’d recommend checking the local programme on the Cœur de Bastides tourist office website closer to the date, as the exact events are usually only confirmed at the start of September.

On 23 September, the Fête de la Gastronomie celebrates producers and local terroir all across France — a good excuse to put together an all-local menu for dinner on the terrace: duck breast, walnuts, Agen prunes and a glass of Bergerac, all within thirty minutes of Les Terrasses.
