In Villeréal itself

Nord Sud is arguably the most popular restaurant in the village, with nearly 400 reviews on TripAdvisor and a rating of 4.8/5. Refined cuisine, warm welcome and personalised dish recommendations: a safe bet just steps from the medieval market hall.

L'Hippocampe is the highest-rated restaurant in Villeréal (5/5). More discreet with around a hundred reviews, it wins hearts with its authentic surf-and-turf cuisine and intimate setting in a quiet alleyway. Booking essential — run by a passionate couple.

La Table de l'Europe (4.8/5, over 225 reviews) rounds out this top trio with carefully crafted French cuisine in a traditional setting. A lovely, elegant address right in the heart of the village.

In Monflanquin (15 min away)

L'Effet Maison, tucked under the arcades of the central square, works exclusively with fresh, locally sourced produce from nearby farmers. The menu changes every three weeks to follow the seasons — French cuisine with a global flavour, very much loved by our guests.

Le Bistrot du Prince Noir (over 360 reviews) is the liveliest restaurant in the village, perfect for a convivial meal with family or friends. Grills, homemade burgers, fish and chips and vegetarian options, all served on a terrace overlooking the bastide. Open lunch and dinner (except Wednesdays and Sundays depending on the season).

La Bastide des Oliviers offers seasonal bistro cuisine in an elegant hotel setting on the edge of the village. A fine choice for a romantic dinner or a long, leisurely lunch.

La Marmaille is the ideal pick for families with children: bar, restaurant and games room all under one roof. Relaxed atmosphere, traditional cooking and reasonable prices.

A little further afield

L'Auberge de Gavaudun (10 km from Monflanquin), nestled at the foot of the medieval fortress, serves generous regional cuisine in an exceptional setting. An address that combines sightseeing with gastronomy.

La Dame du Lac, in Monflanquin on the shores of Lac de Coulon, offers a large terrace with a view and authentic seasonal cuisine — perfect for a summer lunch with your feet almost in the grass.

A few practical tips

• Always book ahead in July and August: the best tables fill up by Wednesday for the weekend.

• The Villeréal Saturday morning market is itself a gastronomic experience: farmhouse cheeses, foie gras, Duras wines and seasonal fruit.
