How can I plan a holiday near Villeréal with children?

Looking for the perfect destination for a family holiday in South-West France? Here is a practical guide to planning a lively, joyful and relaxing stay, within 45 minutes of Villeréal and our villa Les Terrasses in Devillac.

🌞 Choosing the right time of year July and August are buzzing with life, with all the attractions open and plenty of village fêtes. That said, June and September remain firm favourites with families: mild temperatures, smaller crowds and more attractive prices. The heated pool at Les Terrasses is available from spring onwards (weather permitting). A real bonus for the little ones!

🏰 Must-sees with children Right on the doorstep of Villeréal and Devillac – for stress-free days out:

• Monflanquin (15 min): one of the finest bastide towns in the South-West. An interactive visit at the Musée des Bastides (scale models, puzzles, suitable from age 6). Not to be missed: the theatrical show featuring Janouille la Fripouille, a hilarious jester-guide who brings history to life on stage. Children absolutely love it!

• Château de Gavaudun (20 min): a striking hilltop fortress with an activity booklet and treasure hunt.

• Lac de Lougratte (20–25 min): sandy beach, supervised swimming, pedalos, a water slide and play areas. Perfect for a relaxed half-day.

• Petting farm (near Villeréal): stroking animals, feeding the goats… Often the number one activity for toddlers and young children!

A little further afield but well worth it (30 to 45 min):

History & Heritage

• Château des Milandes: stunning gardens and a free-flying birds of prey display. A magical moment for the whole family.

• Château de Biron: imposing and majestic, with trail games and exceptional views.

Nature & Adventure

• Canoeing on the Dordogne or the Dropt: suitable from age 4–5 in a tandem canoe with a parent.

• Lascaux IV (45 min): the most immersive replica of the prehistoric cave. Unforgettable from age 7.

⏰ Planning your days: the rhythm that makes all the difference With children in tow, go for this winning formula: one main activity in the morning (canoeing, a château, Janouille or Lascaux) and free time in the afternoon (a nap, games, the heated pool or a swim at the lake). Do also set aside one or two "unplanned" days: the weekend market in Villeréal or Issigeac, a stroll through a bastide town or an afternoon at the lake are often all it takes to create wonderful memories.

💰 Budget to allow for Paid activities (Lascaux, châteaux, the birds of prey show, canoeing, the tree-top park) come to roughly €300–€450 for a family of four over a week. Happily, many options are free or very affordable: swimming, markets, walks through the bastide towns, Tèrra Aventura and farm visits. All in all, the budget remains very manageable.
